Our hope is that GCC will not only have a ministry to the homeless, but that the homeless will be a part of the GCC community. Jesus made a point of not only serving the poor and those in need, but these were the people that Jesus seemed to enjoy hanging out with most. Jesus even went so far as saying, "whatever you have done for the least of these you did unto me."
Last Christmas, our children had a chance to play the role of the wise men and give presents to Jesus. We gave wrapped packages to all of our homeless friends. Each one had a Bible, radio, watch, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, gloves, and Christmas goodies. It was a blessing to see the joy on the faces of our children and our homeless friends as they gave and received these gifts.
Still, this could not compare to the look on Carlo’s face. Carlo is a homeless man who attended every worship service in 2007. I wish you could see his face light up when he saw Autumn Rose, Aaron and Brandi’s newborn child. Digital media really can’t capture it. Still, this photo seems to be a fitting image of the unique “coming together” that occurs at GCC.
Each week we have dinner following our services. Everyone is welcome to join us, including our homeless friends. One of our members once said that our relationship with the homeless is one of the most uncomforatable aspects of our church, but at the same time, one of the most attractive.
